In February, Arlington Library started their AARP Tax Preparation Help at the Library for Low and Middle Income Tax payers at Central and Columbia Pike Library. For more information about the hours and information needed, check out their website.

Tuesday, February 4th

  • IRS-certified tax counselors will prepare your return for free. For taxpayers of low to moderate income. To make an appointment, visit novataxaide.org. Appointments recommended, walk-ins welcome.

Wednesday, February 5th

  • 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm at Arlington Drafthouse

  • Join us for an evening of laughter for mental health at the Arlington Drafthouse! There will be a full-service bar and dinner menu (this event is 21+), and there will be a giveaway with great prizes from local businesses (stay tuned for details).

  • All proceeds from this event will benefit Our Minds Matter (OMM), a local nonprofit for teen mental health working toward the day when no teen dies by suicide. Driven by research and led by teens, OMM clubs create safe, brave spaces where young people build social connections, practice self-care and healthy habits, and create a new culture of mental well-being for all. This school year alone, OMM’s work will reach 100,000 students through student-led clubs and campaigns in schools and community centers in the DMV and nationwide.

  • Lineup includes: Rahmein Mostafavi, Prince Arora, and Diane Ross.

  • Tickets are $30 each.

From witty one-liners to hilarious anecdotes, they'll keep you entertained throughout the evening.

Thursday, February 6th

Gentle Yoga (Penrose)

  • 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm at Columbia Pike Library

  • A gentle yoga class designed to focus on breathing and destressing. Join Pushpa, of Yoga Abhyaasaa, in a one hour gentle yoga class that focuses on reducing stress, promoting mindfulness, and maintaining mobility. Yoga is for everyone. The guiding principle is: do as much as you can. Yoga affects the whole body-mind complex. Regular practice brings physical benefits like more strength, flexibility, balance, better coordination and control. Subtle benefits are greater awareness of one's own body and mind, better focus, more confidence, calmness, and relaxation.

Loni Love (Penrose)

  • 7:00 pm and 9:30 pm at Arlington Drafthouse

  • Loni Love is an EMMY, two-time NAACP Image & three-time Gracie Award-winning host, comedian, actress, author, and philanthropist. A talk show host known for her dynamic ability to provide in-depth meaningful conversation with a hint of levity , Loni can now be seen as a recurring guest cohost on E!’s Daily Pop and Nightly Pop. She has interviewed top A List entertainers such as Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish and others. Loni cohosted FOX’s The REAL Daytime for 8 seasons in which she interviewed high-profile guests from Vice President Kamala Harris, former First Lady Michelle Obama, Idris Elba and more. Loni was a recurring guest star in the HBO comedy “The Gordita Chronicles” from executive producer Eva Longoria.

  • A philanthropist, Loni is an ambassador for Michelle Obama’s When We All Vote, NAACP, LA Mission, Dress for Success, Reach Higher, LA Regional Food Bank, Project Angel Food, Girl Scouts and the UNCF to name a few.

Saturday, February 8th

  • 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm at Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington

  • Join us for a fun and hands-on floral arrangement workshop! This program kicks off with a floral arrangement demo, showing you creative ways to mix and match blooms. Then participants have a chance to play and experiment with a variety of flowers, colors, and textures. What is a Flower Potluck? Participants will bring flowers (foraged or store-bought, a mix or all the same) + a vessel (something you want to arrange your flowers in). We’ll start by choosing flowers from our collective potluck, so make sure to arrive on time to pick from the full selection and dive into the creative process with us!

  • 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm at HIGHLINE RxR

  • The Capital City Showcase, the company that produces some of the best events in the DMV, presents a unique blend of entertainment. Bring a team or fly solo and win prizes by dropping knowledge in a trivia competition, then duking it out in a karaoke battle!

  • Tickets are only $10 per person when you reserve a group of six to eight people. Individual tickets are $15 per person.

Sunday, February 9th

  • 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm at Westover Library in the Longfellow Room

  • We are partnering with Oddball Cinema. Oddball Cinema presents movies that you won’t find at your local multiplex: obscure, unusual, and independent features, as well as occasional classics. The host will introduce the movie, focusing on what makes it “oddball.” After the film, there will be time to discuss it.

  • Movie details:

    • Title: Destination Plan Negro (2013)

    • Director: Kevin Willmott, Professor Emeritus, Film & Media Studies, The University of Kansas

    • Synopsis: A committee of distinguished African-American academics meets in 1939. As they consider different plans to counter the racist attitudes and institutions of the time, they come to a radical conclusion: the best solution is to leave the planet. Three volunteers embark on the first flight to Mars in anticipation of establishing a society free from white oppression. As in all the best comedies, things do not go as planned.
