Hello and Happy Monday! Cheers to my first newsletter on this new platform. Thanks for your patience as I tried to figure out the best medium for sharing weekly events in Arlington.
In some exciting Arlington news, yesterday at the Olympics, Torri Huske won gold int he 100 meter butterlfy. Torri Huske is an Arlington native and Yorktown High School alum!!

Short Story Social Club (Courthouse)
6:30pm - 7:30 pm at Courthouse Library Cherry Conference Room
Each story is available freely online or as a print-out held at the Courthouse Library. Expect esoteric, experimental, and playfully untraiditonal reads. New members are always welcome. This discussion will focus on “When the Mice Failed to Arrive” by Gerald Murnane
Monday Night Open Mic: Four on the 5th (Shirlington)
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm at Busboys and Poets Shirlington
For two hours, audiences can expect a diverse chorus of voices, and a vast array of professional spoken word performers, open mic rookies, musicians and a different host every week. Expect to be moved, expect a packed house, expect the unexpected, but above all come with an open mind and ear.
$5 cover. Wristbands are available for purchase online at midnight and in the restaurant starting at 10:00 AM. No refunds. Ticket purchase limit of 4 per person. Guests must have their wristbands (tickets) on upon entering the event.
Seating is available on a first come, first seated basis. No saved or reserved seats are allowed. Failure to check in within 30 minutes of advertised start time may result in forfeiture of seats. Sorry, no refunds

Vessels & Passages: A poetry series at MoCAA (Virginia Square)
7:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington
JULY POET: Olga Livshin - Ukrainian-American poet, Olga Livshin, will read original work and translations of Ukrainian poets.
A monthly poetry series hosted at the Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington in the Tiffany Gallery. Vessels and Passages features established poets, who will share their work and facilitate open discussions with the public. The series will also support student and local emerging poet programs in the greater DC area to enable their work to be shared as well. Just like in the visual arts, poets need space to share their creativity, and this series will provide that space.

Dark Star Park Day 2024 (Rosslyn)

Don't miss Rosslyn’s favorite tradition that only comes around once a year! Every Aug. 1, at approximately 9:32 a.m., Nancy Holt’s Dark Star Park (1979-84) performs a special effect. Shadows cast by the spheres and poles of this landmark outdoor sculpture align with their permanent forms on the ground, marking the moment of Rosslyn’s founding. Cross your fingers for a sunny day!
In honor of the year-long celebration of the 40th Anniversary of Arlington’s internationally acclaimed collection of contemporary public art, this year’s event will be augmented by an official County proclamation and the debut of a new poem by Courtney LeBlanc, the third Poet Laureate of Arlington County, commissioned to honor Dark Star Park and the work of artist Nancy Holt. Light refreshments will also be provided by the Rosslyn BID.
Limited-edition commemorative posters (pictured below) by Globe Posters at MICA, rendered in the venerable company’s signature style of bright and bold showcards, will be given away free to attendees, while supplies last.

Why Make a Zine Anyways? Who Cares LOL - An Art Zine Workshop with Johnerick Lawson (Pentagon City/National Landing)
5:30 pm - 7:30 pm at MoCA Arlington Innovation Studio + Store (525 14th St S)
An evening exploring learning by doing with Johnerick Lawson. Join us for an open conversation about the history and the present state of art in Arlington, VA. Hosted by an optimistic observer, Johnerick Lawson, you're invited to contribute to an ongoing Art Zine, Who Cares LOL. Who Cares LOL is a distinctive, free zine that dives into the heart of Arlington’s art scene, offering its limited editions as prized possessions in selected spots around town.
Come and go as you please between 5:30 pm and 7:30 pm.
Columbia Pike Move Night: Wonka (Arlington Mill)

Don’t Tell Comedy Shows advertise the general area for each show. The precise location and other important show details will be sent to ticket holders at 8:00 am the day of the show.
This show is at an indoor location and is 21+.
All comedians remain unknown until the moment they take the stage. There are curated lineups of 4-7 different comics to create a hilarious and diverse show.

Kate Willett (Penrose)

Kate Willett is a New York-based comedian who has appeared on THE LATE SHOW WITH STEPHEN COLBERT and has a stand-up special on Netflix’s THE COMEDY LINEUP. She co-hosts the popular political podcast REPLY GUYS, the first female-hosted leftist political podcast. Some of her other TV credits include Comedy Central’s CC STAND-UP FEATURING (she taped her second appearance this summer which is in the can), Comedy Central’s JIM JEFFERIES SHOW as a guest correspondent, and Viceland’s FLOPHOUSE. Her appearance on Comedy Central’s THIS IS NOT HAPPENING which was on Splitsider’s list of “2016’s Best Late Night Standup Sets.” She has appeared at Bumbershoot, Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Just for Laughs Montreal Comedy Festival, Limestone Comedy Festival, High Plains, Big Sky Festival, Bridgetown, SF Sketchfest, Laughing Skull and many other festivals. In addition to headlining around the nation, she has performed in England, Scotland, Australia, and Canada. Her latest special LOOPHOLES, was listed by Paste Magazine as one of the top 10 comedy specials of 2024 so far and is available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Summertime: Awa Sal Secka Sings Ladies of Jazz (Shirlington)

A few riffs, a little scatting, a lot of fun, and all jazz as powerhouse vocalist Awa Sal Secka toasts luminaries such as Sarah Vaughan, Dinah Washington, Ella Fitzgerald and more. This sultry evening featuring songs such as “Take The A Train,” “Summertime,” “My Funny Valentine,” and “Guess Who I Saw Today.” This cabaret will leave you feeling “Misty.”
